18th February 1917 - Man fined for breach of Lighting Order

War Front: 2nd Batt: A very quiet day in the trenches.

3rd Batt: Batt relieved the 10th Cheshire Reg. Our patrols brought out several dead and 2 wounded men of the 10th Cheshire left from the raid of the 17th February.

4th Batt: Divine service in the school. Men had use of the baths at Heilly and exchanged their soiled clothing.

2/8th Batt: Now in the trenches. Thaw continued causing the mud to get bad.

10th Batt: Owing to mist, observation very difficult. Artillery on both sides very quiet.

Yeomanry/Cavalry: The Anzac Mounted Division moved up from El Arish, now forming part of the Imperial Mounted Division in support at El Burj.

Home Front: City Police Court - Absentee – Pte Leslie Bray, aged 16, was brought up charged with being an absentee from a regiment stationed in the south. Defendant pleaded guilty. P.C. Lawley said that he received a telephone message, and went to Park’s Baths, where the defendant produced a pass in the name of Whitworth. The Chief Constable said that the defendant, by a forged letter, obtained a ticket from the Railway Company. He had in his possession a forged pass. Remanded to await an escort.

Lighting Offence – William Hogben, Victoria House, Foregate Street, was charged with contravening the Lighting Order. Defendant pleaded guilty. P.C. Devey said that he saw a light shining skywards and illuminating the premises. Defendant explained that they were stocktaking. They had forgotten to turn out the gas, which was used to warm the room. He was fined 10s.
