17th February 1917 - Great effort in Worcester in war loans

Rolling casualty count: 5489

War Front: 2nd Batt: Our artillery bombarded the German trenches opposite our lines. Our saps were cleared and only sentries left in the Front line.

4th Batt: There was a Coy route march via Pont Noyelle and Freshencourt. The bombing and Stokes gun classes gave a demonstration on the Anzac School ground at Bois D`Escarbonneuse-the only ground suitable.

2/7th Batt: Batt relieved the 120th Infantry Reg of the French Army in the centre subsection Chaulnes.

2/8th Batt: Batt took over a subsection of Kratz from the 2nd Batt of 130th Reg of the French Infantry.

10th Batt: Two and a half were allotted the baths and then went back to the trenches.

Home Front: Teacher’s National Service- Part-time work only – In several cases recently the Board of Education have been asked to advise whether teachers in public educational institutions should volunteer under the scheme of National Service. In view of the very serious depletion of the staffs of schools owing to military service, the Board feel bound to deprecate volunteering by teachers for full time work under that scheme. It is possible however, that in exceptional cases the special qualifications of individual teachers, for other work, or the special circumstances of the institutions in which they are employed, may justify a view that the balance of public advantage lies on the side of them volunteering under the scheme.

Effort in Worcester – Extraordinary Success – In course of conversation this morning, the Managers of the Loan Banks expressed the opinion unanimously that the Loan effort in Worcester had been an extraordinary success. In considering the total of £716,000., it must be borne in mind that this is the third Loan since July 1915, and in addition to the large amount subscribed locally to the two previous loans, a very considerable sum has been invested locally in Treasury Bonds, Exchequer Bonds and War Savings Certificates.
