Three Choirs Festival cancelled 100 years ago

28th July 2014

The Berrows Journal reports that at a meeting of the ‘Executive Committee’ it was unanimously resolved that the ‘in consequence of the War’ the Three Choirs Festival planned for September 1914 in Worcester would be postponed.

This was the first time in 200 years that the Three Choirs Festival did not take place however the programmes for the Festival were already produced never to be seen until now.

The Three Choirs Festival, held annually since the early eighteenth century and rotating between the three great cathedral cities of Gloucester, Worcester and Hereford, is one of the world’s oldest classical music festivals. A firm fixture in the British music calendar, the festival is a must-visit for lovers of the great choral works from across Britain, Europe, America and Australasia.

The centenary of the outbreak of World War One is a theme throughout the festival which opened on 26 July and runs until 2 August. For more information visit http://3choirs.org/

The 1914 Three Choirs Festival Programme will be included in the Outbreak of War exhibition which will run from 1 August until 30 September at The Hive featuring photographs and documents from the County Archives showing scenes at Home and at the Front.
