As part of a national League of Help, Worcester adopted Gouzeaucourt in 1921 to help rebuild the shattered village which had been behind German lines for much of the War but in 1917 and 1918 was on the front line. Battalions of the Worcestershire Regiment, notably 2/8th Battalion, were in the vicinity and the adoption was based on this connection with the Regiment and the dead in the local cemeteries.
