Benjamin Britten: War Requiem
26th July 2014 at Worcester Cathedral
"Benjamin Britten's War Requiem was written for the opening in 1962 of the new Coventry Cathedral, which replaced the former cathedral building that was destroyed by enemy bombing in the second world war. Britten chose to intersperse sections of the Latin Requiem Mass for the Dead with settings of poetry by Wilfred Owen, one of the most famoyus victims of the First World War. In this opening cathedral concert of the Three Choirs Festival, the Festival Chorus and Philharmonia Orchestra with the choristers of Worcester, Hereford and Gloucester Cathedrals are conducted by Peter Nardone, with Geraint Bowen conducting the semichorus. The soloists are Susan Gritton (soprano), James Oxley (tenor) and David Wilson-Johnson (baritone).
There is a pre-concert talk about Benjamin Britten's Pacifist ideals at 6pm in the King's School. "
