Sydney Harris was born at Dodderhill, Worcestershire, one of seven children of William and Myra Harris. In 1911 Sydney aged 17 resided with his parents and older brother Richard at 22 Causeway Meadows, Stoke Works. He was employed as a Brick Works Labourer.

Sydney’s service records have not survived. He enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment as Private, 2511 at Worcester and his low service number and the fact that he entered France on 1st April 1915 suggests that he may have had previous military service with the regiment and was called up as a Reservist.
