Commemorative events throughout 2017

14th April 2017

Our new Events Leaflet has been produced and there are lots of commemorative events and activities planned for across Worcestershire during 2017.

During Easter you can join us at The Boynes Care Centre, Upton-upon-Severn for WWI Hospital Histories - The Boynes. On Saturday 22 April we will travel through time to a 1917 Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital from 11am - 2pm. Expect re-enactments, work created by local school pupils, lawn games and timed tours of The Boynes.

Throughout the year you can remember the contribution Worcestershire made to World War One in exhibitions at Hartlebury Castle and Malvern Museum of Local History, as well as on touch screens at Worcester Cathedral.

The Worcestershire World War One Hundred Bell Tent will pop up at local events across the County throughout the year including at Norton Community Games in June, Badsey Flower Show in July and Lickey Hills in September. Keep checking the website for details on when and where you can find the Bell Tent.

In June we commemorate the end of the Battle of the Somme when the Battle of The Somme Centenary Tour arrives at Worcester Cathedral. The original 1916 Battle of the Somme film by Geoffrey Malins and John McDowell will be screened and accompanied by a live soundtrack performed by the British Police Symphony Orchestra. Composer Laura Rossi and Dr Toby Haggith, Senior Curator at The Imperial War Museum will give pre-performance talks about the battle and the musical score. Tickets are available from Worcester Live with all proceeds going to charity.

In October we will remember and honour the anniversary of the Victoria Cross being awarded to Private Frederick George Dancox. There will be a Freedom March through Worcester City Centre and the unveiling of a memorial plaque. Keep an eye on our website for more details on these events.

November's Armistice will see a number of talks and activities take place, in remembrance, at The Hive. Expect talks to include: Emily Mayhew - stretcher bearers and the casualty evacuation chain; Rebecca Wynter - Dr. Martha Stewart, first female Resident Medical Officer; Alice Edwards - research into general medical developments in Worcestershire during World War One.

For the full programme for the year, pick up a copy of our Events Leaflet, available at The Hive and Worcester Tourist Information Centre. Remember to keep checking our website for more details on all the events.
