Local brothers lose their lives at Qatia

23rd April 2016

The Battles of Qatia and Oghratina saw the loss of 9 officers and 101 other ranks. Many soldiers were initially reported missing before families at home received the devastating news of their deaths.

With kind permission from the Hanglin family, here we can share newspaper articles and photographs of just two of the over 100 men who died on 23 April 1916.

Ernest and Percy Hanglin were brothers from Kidderminster. Their father was the local butcher in Bewdley Street, Kidderminster with Trooper Percy Hanglin carrying on the family business before signing up. He was also Secretary for the Master Butchers Association. The local paper reports that Percy’s brother Ernest had returned to active service when war broke out, having previously served ten years with the Yeomanry.
