Family Remembrance activities at Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum

7th November 2014

This Saturday, 8 November Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum welcomes visitors to take part in family remembrance activities linked to the current exhibition "World War One: In the Words of Worcestershire People".

The Family Remembrance Day is a free event and includes drop-in workshops with artist Kate Brookes, performances by the Stringcredibles and music and poetry workshops as well as an opportunity to experience World War One with Discover History.

Discover History re-enactors will be at the Gallery from 11 – 4 portraying 'World War One History in the Trenches' and showing WW1 artefacts and facsimiles offering both a' Home Front' and 'At War' perspective.

Families or individuals can join in with a war poetry workshop from 1.30 – 2.30. Discussing the historical context of war poetry, the group will be inspired to provide their own poetic response to the gallery's World War One exhibition. There will also be a performance of war poetry at 3pm.

Artist Kate Brookes will be leading drop-in workshops from 11 – 4, where visitors can create ' Tokens of Love' – small 'mother pillows' and pin cushions, similar to those made by convalescing soldiers for their sweet hearts and loved ones. Kate will also be making poppy hearts from tissue paper; visitors can write a poignant message on their poppy heart and pin it on the Gallery's Remembrance Board.

The Gallery also welcomes a performance by The Stringcredibles at 11.30am. The Stringcredibles are an independent string quartet of CBSO musicians and will be performing their First World War show 'Tunes from the Trenches'. Later in the day at 3pm musician David Jarratt-Knock will play the Last Post and the Reveille.

Whilst visitors are enjoying the family remembrance activities they can also visit the current exhibition "World War One: In the Words of Worcestershire People". Almost 2,000 people have already visited the exhibition which opened on 25 October and explores the words and mementos of Worcestershire people brought together in public for the first time. The exhibition is on until 14 March 2015 at the Art Gallery and Museum.
