Gheluvelt Park to Gheluvelt Belgium
30th October 2014
Gheluvelt Park to Gheluvelt
Nigel Bradford and Ian Smith will drive two Malvern Morgan cars from Gheluvelt Park to Gheluvelt itself, 286miles away, to lay wreaths from the Regiment, the People of Worcester, Morgan Motors, Kings School Worcester and Malvern College. Nigel and Ian hope to bring back a bag of soil from the grounds of Gheluvelt Chateau.
Nigel and Ian will arrive 100 years to the minute after the Worcesters were asked “what kept you?” at the Worcestershire’s memorial near the site of the original battle. Their journey will begin on 30 October from Gheluvelt Park in cars that whilst modern would have been familiar to soldiers at the time.
Mr Nigel Bradford, RD said: “Gheluvelt Park was a huge part of my Childhood. Such a wonderful place with a wonderfully exotic sounding name. A place of great fun but, as I recognised in later life, tinged with solemn remembrance. So I decided to set out on an adventure to commemorate its name.”
“We will travel in two Morgan, cars that would not have seemed that unfamiliar 100 years ago, and built in the County. So we will be taking little bits of Worcestershire to Gheluvelt itself, leaving England in expectation and high spirits, as all soldiers did. Then we shall return to the City, after acts of Remembrance in Belgium, mindful of the many who did not, but thankful for their deeds on that day 100 years ago.”
