10th October 1917 - BUTTER PRICES AT WORCESTER

War Front:

2nd Batt: Coys firing on the range during the day. Major Pardoe proceeded to England on lighter duty and Capt. HIE Ripley took over command of the Batt until Col Gogarty`s return.1/8th Batt: A and D Coys were withdrawn from the Batt and was relieved by the 10th Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders.

4th Batt: Batt relieved by the 7th Lincolns Reg. and marched down to Harrow Camp near Elvertinghe. At 9.30am men entrained to International Corner and then marched to Sarawak Camp.

10th Batt: 2nd Lt HA Barker attached to the Batt from the 10th Royal Warwicks.

Home Front:

FURRIER FINED AT MALVERN – For Making Statements Prejudicing Recruitment – At Malvern Petty Sessions a Malvern Link Furrier, Alfred Ashton, was summoned for making statements likely to prejudice recruiting. Thomas Watts, of Parkfield, Somers Park Avenue, said he had a shop opposite the defendant. On September 1st defendant came into his shop and asked him what the news was that morning. He told defendant that Morel had been arrested. Defendant remarked “that’s what’s done in this country when a man speaks the truth”. Defendant then said, “the people who started this War ought to be made to fight it”. He went on to declare that England started the War and that England had no right to be in it.

BUTTER PRICES AT WORCESTER – A Protest – Copies of the following letter have, we are informed been sent to the Food Controller, the Mayor of Worcester and Councillor R Fairbairn: “I wish to draw your attention and the attention of your local Food Committee to the various (and outrageous) prices charged for butter in the Worcester Market on Saturday last. On enquiry in the market I was asked 2s.10d a pound, but obtained it at 2s.9d a lb, being a regular customer. Now if you do not consider this “fleecing” the public, I am befogged. Why should these prices be charged!
