20th October 1917 - ALLEGED THEFTS FROM STOURBRIDGE G.W.R. STATION

War Front:

2/7th Batt: 2nd Lt retains Acting Rank of Captain command of C Coy.

2/8th Batt: Enemy quieter. 2nd Lt RB Forsyth went to England as sick, 1 other rank to CCS.

4th Batt: Musketry classes continued. Several horses and men lent to French farmers to help with agriculture.

10th batt: Batt cleaning up and improving the camp.

Home Front:

ALLEGED THEFTS FROM STOURBRIDGE G.W.R. STATION – Howard Farmer (24) Shunter and William Clarke were charged with stealing six bottles of gin and six bottles of port wine and other articles, the property of the Great Western Railway, Stourbridge. The case occupied a long time in hearing and many witnesses were called. Prisoners totally denied the charge. The jury found the prisoners not guilty and they were discharged.

LORD HINDLIP’S ESTATE – Breaking-up Land – At a meeting of the County War Agricultural Executive on Saturday, the question of the breaking-up of land on Lord Hindlip’s Estate was considered. The recommendation of the sub-committee was that the land should be broken up, be acted upon. The Chairman seconded and the motion was unanimously carried.
