5th April 1917 - Territorials battle in snow south of Epehy

Rolling casualty count: 5757

War Front: 2nd Batt: Batt marched after dinner to huts outside Mondecourt where men were comfortable.

1/8th attack The Mound at Templeux-le-Guerard, south of Epehy. Snow and unrecconoitred ground made difficult conditions and successful capture came to cost in casualties

2/7th Batt: men working on the roads and craters in Villeveque.

2/8th Batt: Batt established another port in Bois de Cantenay

3rd Batt: Batt marched to St Marie Carpel where men underwent a course of musketry under the supervision of the staff of 25th Divisional Musketry School.

4th Batt: Batt marched to Le Souiche to good billets and the transport lines. Men met up with several from the 2nd Worcs who had been in Mondecourt.

9th Batt: Batt marched to camp at Judaida.

10th Batt: General cleaning up and kit inspection.

SMD RFA: The attack on Lempire was a success.

Yeomanry/Cavalry: A German aeroplane was shot down by the infantry.

Home Front: Worcestershire and the War – “Mention” for War Service – A list of officers added to those who have been brought to the notice of the Secretary State for War for valuable services rendered in connection with the war, includes the name Lt.Col (temp Colonel) H G Morgan C.B.D.S.O., Reserve Officers, A.S.C. Col Morgan, who is well known in Worcester, is the chief of the Forage Department of the Army Services Corps., Lt Col Robertson (of Worcester) the Chief of the Midland Area and Lt. Col Moody (of Stourbridge) the Chief of a northern area were similarily mentioned.

Funeral of Capt. P.U. VIGORS – Military from Command Depot – The funeral of Capt. Vigors, Worcestershire Regiment, took place at Martin Hussingtree today. It was attended with full military honours, and there were many manifestations of sorrow by his military comrades and friends and by citizens of all classes.

Exploit – A dozen boys and girls were charged with committing damage to enamelled advertisement plates at Shrub Hill to the extent of £2.
