3rd April 1917 - Lenin arrives back in Russia by a sealed train allowed to pass through Germany from Switzerland

Rolling casualty count: 5736

War Front: 2nd Batt: Batt marched to Beauval to billets which were fairly comfortable but rather crowded Nissan huts. Only 2 men fell out from weak ankles on the march.

2/7th Batt: General consolidation of posts & men were wounded.

4thBatt: Three inches of snow fell am.Training of Coysin the attack, with and without a barrage. There were also demonstrations of wire-cutting and intensive digging.

10th Batt: Batt moved from Hazebrouk to Arques.

SMD RFA: A section of men moved forward and came into action. Lt FH Adshead was wounded while reconnoitring.

Yeomanry/Cavalry: Preparations made for further attack on the Gaza positions. Tanks on land and warships at sea joined in constant shelling and there were bombing attacks by aeroplane.

Home Front: SNOWSTORMS AND SEVERE FROST – The abnormally bad weather which marked the weekend over practically the whole of the British Isles became even worse in the course of Monday night. When day broke on Monday the countryside was already under snow, which had fallen heavily over an extensive region. The provinces suffered more severely, reports from all parts showed that many localities had from three to fifteen inches of snow and drifts many feet deep, the heaviest April snowstorm for 50 or 60 years.

The Malverns – Police Court – Wednesday before Mr A Sparkes – Remanded – William Henry Sharpe, labourer of Thorneloe Cottage, Belvoir Bank, was charged with stealing 2cwt of coal, the property of Adeline Schuberg. P.C. Houghton gave evidence and prisoner was remanded on bail.
