14th December 1916 - Guildhall full for fundraising concert

Rolling casualty count: 5102

2nd Batt: batt relieved in the evening by the 5th Scottish Rifles and marched back to Maurepas where motor lorries took the men to camp near Suzanne. Batt had a total of 85 men with trench foot.

4th Batt: Batt marched to Edgehill and entrained for Hengist. Transport proceeded by road direct to Moullens Vidames. Two Lewis guns were left at the station with a party of guards.

2/8th batt: men were allowed the baths while others were in working parties. Seven more men evacuated sick.

9th batt: At 3am batt moved quietly over the rough ground. As dawn broke news came that the Cavalry advance had scared the Turks from outposts along the river and there was no opposition. Men dug in and slept on the ground.

Home Front:

Christmas Leave – The Secretary of the War Office forwards the following for publication: With regard to Christmas leave for soldiers, the decision announced on December 4th was arrived at by the War Committee after consideration – and the announcement was made at the earliest moment as to give the fullest possible notice of the restriction of railway traffic. It was been decided to make arrangements enabling the same proportion of the troops in this country to spend Christmas at home as last year.

Concert at Guildhall – For Blind Soldiers and Sailors – The Guildhall was filled on Tuesday night when a concert was given in aid of the funds of the National Carol League, which has been formed to help the valuable work of training our blinded soldiers and sailors now being carried on at St Dunstan’s Hostel, Regents Park.
