Home Front:

Horse and Dray in the Canal: There was an exciting scene near the Lowesmoor Canal Bridge this morning. A horse and dray belonging to Messrs. Harper, the brewers, was left standing (while goods were being delivered) near the canal. The horse was attracted by the grass near by, moved towards it, and commenced to eat it. Its gradual progress brought it nearer and nearer to the water, until one wheel of the dray was over the edge of the canal kerbing. The dray must have then overbalanced and fallen into the water, dragging the horse with it. Help was speedily forthcoming. Mr. Parker, the brewer, assisted by Mr. F. Smith and a comrade (both employed by the Corporation), got the horse into shallow water, Smith holding the horse’s head up with a shovel…Having succeeded in rescuing the horse (which had a narrow escape from drowning), efforts were made to save the dray. With a boathook, it was pulled to a convenient landing place on the other bank and dragged out with ropes. There were several cases of bottled beer on the dray and they went to the bottom when the dray overbalanced.

Prize Kittens: At the Southern Counties Cat Show, held in London on Thursday, Mrs. Aubrey, of Worcester, in Chinchilla kitten classes, was awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes in Class 3 to 6 months, and 1st prize in 6 to 9 months. In breeder’s class open to any variety, except blue, the Laugherne Chinchillas were placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and reserve, and in novice class 1st, 2nd, and reserve. Six specials, and a silver medal, were also awarded to Mrs. Aubrey’s team of Chinchillas.
