9th November 1916 - Appointment of Alderman Arthur Carlton as Mayor

2nd Batt: Brigade General inspected the Batt in am. and read out a congratulatory letter from the French Reg for the success in the Battle of Transloy Ridges.

4th Batt: A German plane was brought down North East of Ville at 11.30am.

10th Batt: Owing to very bright moonlight it was impossible to send out patrols.

Home Front:

Raid Warnings in Theatres: Arrangements have been made by which theatres, music-halls, cinemas, etc., will, if desired, be warned of the apprehended air raid in order to afford an opportunity for the audience to disperse. Mr. Samuel states in parliamentary papers. It is not proposed to give a general pubic warning in the London area.

The statutory meeting of the City Council took place today… The Retiring Mayor said that the clock had struck 12, and he ceased to be their Mayor. It was his pleasant duty to suggest a resolution for the appointment of his successor – Ald. Arthur Carlton – who at the recent private meeting of the Council, was selected unanimously by his colleagues. Therefore, he had the greatest pleasure in moving that Ald. Carlton be appointed Mayor. (Applause)

Labourer’s Offence: John Maund (45), labourer, Lower Street Walk, Tallow Hill, was charged with indecency in Trinity Street. Mr. Redband, caretaker at the Masonic Hall, and two ladies gave evidence that defendant was guilty of the offence in daylight. They thought defendant had had some drink. Prisoner denied the offence, and Detective Handley now said that when charged prisoner denied it. He did not reply to the summons to attend the Court, and was arrested on Wednesday. He had been previously convicted of similar offences. He was sent to prison for 14 days’ hard labour.
