22nd October 1916 - Casualties as 1st and 4th Battalions fight alongside each other
Rolling casualty count: 4681
1st Batt: Batt relieved by 2nd East Lancs and withdrew to Needle Trench.
2nd Batt: Batt marched to Massel Camp to tent billets which were overcrowded.
3rd Batt: Batt relieved by 6th Wilts and marched to billets in Bouzincourt.
4th Batt: Batt started mending roads at 5.30am and worked for 4 hours on the Longueval to Flers Road. Leather jerkins were issued to each man. One officer and 150 men reported for work to prepare track for a light railway between Longueval and Flers.
1/8th Batt: Divine service am and inspection by CO. Platoon football matches were played pm.
2/8th Batt: Divine Service am. A draft of 55 men arrived from Base.
10th Batt: Batt relieved the 8th Border Reg, the 8th South Lancs and the 11th Cheshires in the trenches.
SMD RFA: heavy German bombardment during the night and at 5.15am an SOS was received as Germans attempted to raid Hebuterne trenches.
Worcester Watch Committee – Air Raid Warning Question – The Town Clerk read a letter from the corn and seed mechants in the city objecting to confirmation of the closing order applying to their shops on the grounds that it would impose unnecessary restrictions on, and curtailment of the liberties of the subject, and that it was possible that the conditions and circumstances might be altered after the War, or at some future time as to render the compulsory closing of their shops a serious hardship and inconvenience, not only to shopkeepers, but on the public generally.
Rewards for Bravery D.S.O. for Col. Harman A long list of rewards conferred on officers and men for gallantry is issued today. Lieut. Col Alexander Harman, Worcestershire Regiment - For the excellent handling of his Battalion, notably when clearing the enemy’s trenches with great determination during several consecutive days.
