Lives lost on this day: 1

30th September 1916 - Military Cross : Lieut. H.E. Wyatt, Worcester Regiment

2nd Batt: Batt marched 4 miles to excellent billets at Le Souich. In pm there were Divisional lectures at Patronage Bouquemaison.

4th Batt: A raid was made by 1st Lancs Fusiliers at 8,30pm. A raiding party entered the german trenches and found they had left the Front line leaving rifles and equipment, even coats, which the raiding party brought back. Evidently a relief was being carried out.

SMD RFA: German counter attack on Schwaben Redoubt. A shell hit a gun-pit causing 7 casualties.

The Rev. Dr. R. Vaughan Pryce, who was Pastor of Angel Street Congregational Church from 1871 to 1876, will occupy the pulpit of his old Church on Sunday morning and evening. Dr. Vaughan Pryce retired a year or two ago from the Principalship of New College, London. His visit will have a greater interest than that of renewing some of the associations of 40 years ago. It will in a sense prepare the way for the ministry of his own son, who has been invited to accept the pastorate (vacated by the resignation of the Rev. A. Hallack), and will commence his ministry at the end of next month, being now at work with the Y.M.C.A in France.

Sacrilege: St. Clement’s Church was broken into on Tuesday evening. The would-be thief or thieves entered through the bottom vestry window, and then went into the church where two offertory boxes were smashed. Neither contained any money, the Church officials having emptied them on the previous Sunday evening. Nothing was missed and no damage was done.

Hop Market: During the week 1,315 pockets of hops have been weighed out. This makes the total number of this year’s growth up to Friday night 2,599 pockets. The market is firm. The bulk of the business is being done between £5 and £6 but growers are holding out for £7, and in some cases nearly £7 has been paid. Some large growers are asking £8, which limits business.

Military Cross : Lieut. H.E. Wyatt, Worcester Regiment, an old Grammar School boy, who gained a classical exhibition at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in 1914, has been awarded the Military Cross, with the congratulations of the Commander-in-Chief, for gallant conduct on the night of September 15th. He went forward with four men to blow a way through the German entanglements, and though seriously wounded in the abdomen in nine places, carried out the work. His four men have also been recommended for the D.C.M. and Military Medal. Lieut. Wyatt is at the base, and is progressing favourably.
