On the Home Front:
Rank and File – Killed Worcester Man’s Fearlessness - Mr J Alcock, Relieving Officer, Worcester, has now received official note of the death in action of his second Son, Lce. Cpl. C Alcock, Royal Fusiliers (Public Schools Corps). A comrade of the deceased writes a very sympathetic letter, in which he says:- “When we were transferred to this Batallion three of us asked to be put together in the same platoon, and it was here that I first made intimate acquaintance with him. Out of the trenches he was one of the most cheerful and companionable men one could wish to meet. In the trenches he was always around cheering and encouraging his section. He had absolutely no knowledge of the word fear. He repeatedly volunteered for patrol work and extremely dangerous and difficult tasks, where his knowledge of German was of inestimable value. I am certain that our late Company Commander, who was killed the same day as your son, had a very high opinion of his capabilities. He was killed on July 27th, while our Battalion was taking Delville Wood and the village of Longueval. He was badly wounded in several places during the advance. He turned back to go to the dressing station, but collapsed before getting there. When he was going back, he was still smiling.”
