Brilliant Worcesters – How Prussian Guard was Repulsed – Enemy’s Frightful Losses Describing the defeat of the Prussian Guards by the Wiltshires and the Worcestershires, which was specially mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig’s despatch on Saturday, the Central News Special Correspondent says:- Paris, Sunday – “The positions recently won on the Somme front by the British are of extreme importance, for with the exception of a few small salient the whole of the Thiepval Pzieres-Longueval plateau is now in their hands. The British Troops, therefore dominate the Bapaumo plain and the enemy, as might have been expected, has made gigantic efforts to recover some of the lost ground at certain points. Realising the absolute necessity of striking hard the German High Command prepared a great attack, for which the Prussian Guard was brought up. The Germans commenced operations as usual with a thorough artillery bombardment, while the British, kept excellently informed by their air service, prepared to receive the shock which was plainly coming.

It came at nightfall and was formidable. The troops of the Wiltshire and Worcestershire Regiments displayed magnificent courage and firmness and a gigantic struggle developed as the result of which, after bloody hand to hand fighting, the British victoriously resisted all the onslaughts and the famed Prussian Guard failed completely at every point.

Thomas Bertie Retley, licensed victualler, Station Hotel, Stourport, was summoned for failing to produce a driving license of a motor when requested to do so. P.C. Drinkwater said he stopped defendant because he had brilliant side lights, and when he asked him for his license he could not produce it. Defendant said the offence was an oversight. He was ordered to pay the costs, and his license was not endorsed.
