29th August 1916 - In France, General Erich von Falkenhayn is replaced as Chief of the General Staff of the German field armies by Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, with General Erich Ludendorff as Chief Quartermaster General

At the Front:

1st Batt: Heavy thunderstorms all day caused problems.

2nd Batt: Divisional band played selections in the evening near the Camp.

3rd Batt: Three days of battle had cost the 3rd Worcs a total loss of 234 men including 9 officers.

4th Batt: Orders received for a move to Ypres tomorrow.

10th Batt: The Bull Ring bombarded by Minenwerfers. At 12 midnight an officer’s patrol reported germans working on repairing their parapets. They were fired on by our heavy guns.

On the Home Front:

Women Commercial Travellers – The woman commercial traveller is steadily making her way into the profession, though as yet she rarely appears at the “ordinary” in the commercial rooms of the hotels. She is seen up and down the country doing business quietly and efficiently and in many cases making it evident that she can hold her own with the best of business men.

Commission for Old Malvernian – Sargeant D Knight of the Artists’ Rifles , the old Malvern, Oxford and Surrey cricketer, has been given a commission in the Grenadier Guards.

The Late Sir Richard Martin – Funeral at Overbury The funeral of Sir Richard Biddulph Martin took place at Overbury on Saturday. In the Church and by the graveside there gathered a large number of relatives, friends and many of the tenanry and workpeople on the estate. In fact the Church, a monument to the generosity of the Martins was crowded. The service was conducted by the Bishop of Worcester. Speaking at the graveside said that “as a man of business, country gentleman, a member of Parliament and thoughtful landlord, a dear friend and devout Christian, he went through this world and now came to his rest”.
