16th July 1916 - 4th Bn prepare for raid

At the Front:

1st Batt: Batt cleaning up and weather hot.

2nd Batt: Batt relieved and went back to bivouacs.

4th Batt: Working party of 3 officers and 240 other ranks was formed to carry “Rogers” to the front line. Orders received to prepare a raid for tomorrow night.

2/8th batt: A and C Coys relieved by 12th East Yorks and proceeded to Estaire in motor lorries.

On the Home Front:

Angling: The weather this week has been very trying to anglers. The heavy rainstorms have hampered operations, but have freshened up the water and improved sport among the coarse fish very much, and a good many rods have been out. In the Queen’s Arms Club water below Diglis fine catches of roach and dace have been taken.

Widow’s Attempted Suicide: Emma Welch (64), widow, of 104, Tybridge Street, was charged with attempting to commit suicide by throwing herself in Laugherne Brook. Her daughter, Lucy Welch, said prisoner had been strange at times. She had a funny temper. Prisoner’s sister went to an asylum about five years ago…Ernest Oliver Pearson, clerk, Lowesmoor, said that he was walking on the Bransford Road, near Laugherne Brook, when he heard a splash. He saw the prisoner in the water. The water was very shallow at the spot. The prisoner said that she wished he had not disturbed her, as she wanted to do away with herself. …Prisoner’s daughter agreed to take care of her. The Bench, after warning her not to repeat the attempt, bound over the prisoner for six months.
