4th Batt: the raiding party left at 9.25pm with 3 officers and 30 other ranks. At 10pm gas was discharged and germans noticed within 3 minutes. Heavy bombardments on both sides.
SMD RFA: Wire cutting taking place by day. Increased activity at night.
Open Verdict at Inquest: An inquest was held as to the death of Alice Fletcher (46), 17, Skinner Street, Worcester, whose body was recovered from the Teme on Wednesday morning. The husband said his wife had been missing from home since Monday week. He searched the villages in the neighbourhood without avail. Later he saw a paragraph in a newspaper describing a woman who had been taken from the Teme, and identified the body. She had had bad health, and was “funny in the head at times.” Mrs. Annie Bosley, a daughter, who had been living with her mother, said that when she had a “giddy turn” she did not know what she was doing… The Jury returned a verdict of “Found drowned.”
Two Worcester Brothers: Official news has been received that Lieut. Frederick Heath, of a battalion of the Warks. Regiment, is wounded; and unofficial news has been received that his brother, Sergt. L.B. Heath, who was in the same Company of the same Battalion, was killed on the opening days’ fighting of the recent push in France. They were two of the five sons of Mr. Thomas Heath, and a third of their brothers, Regt. Sergt. H. Heath, who is in a Worcestershire Battalion (with 20 years unbroken service to his credit) is engaged in the British activities. No news of him has been received. Mr. Oscar Heath and Mr. Richard Heath, are well known in connection with local cricket; the last named is now farming in Canada.
