20th April 1916 - General Lawrence and Col Coventry lead men to guard engineers tasked with digging wells.

At the Front:

4th Batt: Divisional Major Gen De Lisle visited the firing line.

8th Batt: Lt GT Roscoe, 3rd East Lancs, Divisional trainer ASC was attached to the Batt.

9th Batt: The Batt was relieved and sent to reserve trenches. 140 NCOs and men plus 5 officers were lost.

10th Batt: March via Garbecqu, Molinghem, Lambres, Witternesse and Blessy to billets at Marthos. Only 2 men fell out. Weather fine but cold.

Yeomanry/Cavalry: General Lawrence and Col Coventry led men to guard the party of engineers who were to dig wells.

On the Home Front:

City Quarter Sessions - Theft of iron - Fred Williams (46) dealer was charged with stealing from Messrs D W Barker's brickyard 14 iron caps, an iron balance and a number of other iron articles. Detective Handley saw the prisoner in Tolladine Road with a rag and bone truck. On the truck he found a bag containing some of the articles and the others he found in the bottom of the truck. Prisoner said that he had found the articles in the bag within the fence of Messrs Barker's yard. Mr T Quarrel, Managing Director of Barkers, proved the certificate of incorporation which was necessary for a successful prosecution. Prisoner said that he had found the bags and thought someone had thrown them aware. He asked to be given a chance and he would enlist. Chief Inspector Smith said that the prisoner had several convictions including one of three years penal servitude. He was found guilty and sentenced to 18 months hard labour.

Mr L G Winter on Shakespeare and Music - There was a large attendance at the lecture by Mr Leonard Winter on Shakespeare and Music, one he has given previously here and at Shakespeare's Birthplace. He has made a speciality of this period of musical history and made it very interesting. It gained popularity by the fact that it was illustrated not only by a few lantern slides, but also by vocal and instrumental music. Mr Winter was aided in this by his wife and a string quartet
