The City Coroner held an inquest at the Guildhall into the death of George Lane, Coal Dealer and Labourer of 17 Lowesmoor Terrace whose body was found in the canal. Ernest Lane reported that his brother suffered from epileptic fits which he had frequently. He had no other troubles and had never threatened to take his life.. The body was found 30 yards from George Street Bridge and had been in the water some time, according to Dr Coombs possibly three weeks. PC Harrington said that there were no marks of violence and nothing to indicate the cause of death. The jury returned a verdict that Lane fell in the canal through a fit.
