5th March 1916 - Schoolboy fined for damaging gaslamp

At the Front:

1st Batt: German trenches only 100-150 yards away from Batt trenches.

2nd Batt: Batt attended church in the yard of the Chateau at 11am. Roman catholics attended Mass in Vendin Church. CO and Company Commander inspected the Le Touray Line of trench works which were in fairly good condition but still require improvements.

8th Batt: Batt relieved by 7th Worcs in the trenches east of Colincamps. This was one of the most trying tours in the trenches the batt had experienced as heavy snow was followed by a rapid thaw.

On the Home Front:

City Police Court: Robert Day, 23, Mill Street, Diglis, was charged with being a deserter from “X” Company, 4th Worcestershire Regt. D.C. Hindley stated the facts, and prisoner was remanded to await an escort.

Children’s Court: Alfred Darling (10), of 51, Tunnel Hill, schoolboy, was ordered up for damaging a gas lamp at Holly Mount, Tunnel Hill. Evidence was given that the boy shot it with a catapult. He was fined 1s.
