29th February 1916 - Military tribunal considers cases of Dents & Fownes glovers

At the Front:

1st Batt: At 9.20am the batt marched to the train at Thiennes. At 11.30 enrained to Calonne and Reacourt and then marched to Bruay. No British troops had been there before but French soldiers friendly. Billets good. Baggage and transport arrived at 9.00pm.

2nd Batt: Holding trenches around Bethune, South of La Bassee Canal.. No event of note happened.

10th Batt: Coys marched to trenches to relieve 10th Royal Warwickshire. A,B and D Coys in the front line and C Coy in the support posts. Rockets were sent up for practice purposes and most were found to be un-satisfactory.

SMD RFA: Some german artillery action. Several German aeroplanes flew over.

On the Home Front:

Position of glovers

The case of glovers employed at both Dents and Fownes glove manufacturers has been considered by the military tribunal. Men were granted exemption for 14 days to give the military and manufacturers time to make arrangements. Colonel Williams said that all those questioned would be considered and the men with dependents would have preference.

Mrs N Jeynes of Charles Street has just received news of her husband's death. He was killed in action at the Dardenelles. He had been previously reported missing since August 6th. He has three brothers serving in France and two in the Government. He leaves a wife and two children.
