Farmers’ Red Cross Sale: Several people have written to the Auctioneer expressing regret that they were not present to enjoy the fun caused by the sale of the celebrated donkey, and he points out that the list is still open, and that he will be happy to receive further donations. It should be stated that Mr. Harry Tyler, who was the highest bidder, gave not only £25 for himself, but £5 for Mrs. Tyler, and £6 for his eldest and youngest daughters.

The death occurred at Newport (Isle of Wight), on Friday, of Cosino de Gicca, aged 84, who claimed to be the first Italian to come to England with the barrel organ. He landed at Bristol in 1854.

The woman bank clerk is a success: At their annual meetings, Mr. Cecil Parr, of Parr’s Bank, and Lord Inchcape, of the National Provincial Bank, differed on the subject. Mr. Parr said: “Girl clerks are unable, in spite of their intelligent enthusiasm, to make up entirely for the ability and experience of men whose places they have filled.” Lord Inchcape said that the 659 girl clerks of the bank were “doing uncommonly good work and improving every day.”…One leading bank official said there must always be limitations against the complete efficiency of women bank clerks. “They can write up a pass-book and are excellent at indexing but they are hardly suitable as cashiers. The sheer physical work of a bank cashier is far greater than people realise, and in some banks, especially country banks, he has to lift very heavy weights of silver and copper coins.”

For the Young Benedicts: We are asked to draw attention to an alteration in the recruiting orders affecting recently married men who have been attested. The original order stated that men who were married after August 15th should be regarded as single and placed in the first 23 groups. This date has been altered to November 1st. Thus any married man, who, because he was married after August 15th, has been put down as a single man, will be put back 23 groups if he applies at the Broad Street Recruiting Office. This applies only to those married before November 1st.
