10th January 1916 - In the Caucasus, Russian forces push back the Turks and go on to capture Erzerum and Trabzon. Fighting continues until 18 April.

11th Batt: Men have another grievance! Meat is being flavoured with the aromatic shrub used to supplement the meagre fuel supply and the aroma goes into all cooked food!

Gallant Dudley Soldier: Sgt. M. Day, 1/7th Worcestershires has been recommended or the highest decoration a man could win for his courage in saving an officer under heavy fire. He was examining the barbed wire in front of his trench when the Germans suddenly opened a rapid fire. His officer was hit and Sgt. Day carried him to an old trench, where they lay for nearly an hour under machine-gun and bomb fire. Unhappily, his gallantry could not save his officer’s life, for he died from his wounds.

Theatre Lessee and Servant Fined: Mr. A.R.Carlton, lessee of the Theatre Royal, was summoned for supplying , through his servant, intoxicating liquor to several persons during prohibited hours in the Theatre pit bar; Florence Ratcliffe, the servant, was summoned for aiding and abetting him, and four other people were charged with unlawfully consuming intoxicating liquor in the pit bar during prohibited hours. All the defendants pleaded not guilty.

Worcester Auxiliary: Members of the Worcester auxiliary of the Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Institution held their annual meeting at the Crown Hotel, Mr. W. Crump presiding. The Committee regretted that the beautiful grounds of Madresfield and Davenham were not available to benefit the funds as they grounds were reserved for wounded soldiers and those in training in the Malvern district. However Mr. R. J. Corbett, son of the late John Corbett, of Impney, again kindly offered to open his grounds for the benefit of the funds.
