25th January 1916 - Conscription Begins

At the Front:

1st Batt: Batt paraded as for programme for Divisional Billets.

3rd Batt: Relieved from front line to Outtersteene for rest and training, resting for one night at the little village of La Creche.

SMD RFA: Heavy bombardment by enemy along whole Brigade front and enemy entered the trenches of the 8th Warwickshires

10th Batt: Refitting and cleaning up.

On the Home Front:

First Military Service Bill introduced conscription of all single men aged 18 - 40.

A Scoutmaster D.C.M.: Sergeant Harold Boyd, 2nd Worcestershire Regiment, who has been awarded the D.C.M, was a prominent Dudley Scoutmaster. He was four times recommended for the honour. During an attack Sergeant Boyd exposed himself fearlessly while signalling for assistance, and for that act was promoted on the field.

Former Postman’s Death: Mrs. Richard Munn, of Broadheath and Infirmary Walk, Worcester, has received the sad news that her eldest son, Thomas Proctor, has died in Australia. Mr. Proctor, was for a number of years postman at Broadheath, and also assisted his mother in the business of market gardener. Mrs. Munn’s only surviving son is serving with the Worcester Artillery in France.

The wounded at Battenhall Mount showed respect for the Misses Ogilvy, two of the sisters (who are leaving the hospital for a time), by arranging a concert / The concert opened with a pianoforte solo by Sapper Scott, R.E. Deputy Section Leader Foss sang several popular songs and Section Leader Ayliffe gave violin solos. The concert came to a close with all joining hands and singing “Auld Lang Syne.”

Worcestershire Hunt: The Annual General Meeting of the Subscribers and Supporters of the Worcestershire Hunt will be held at the Star Hotel, Worcester on Saturday, January 29th, at 3.30pm.

Worcester Territorial’s Death: The death occurred at his Barbourne residence of Mr. Frank Jones, formerly a member of the 8th Worcestershires has died. He went to France with that Battalion, and served with them until he had to be sent home some months ago with illness, contracted in the trenches. This lingering disease caused him to be invalided out of the Army, and it ended fatally as stated. He was only 29 years of age, and he leaves a young widow. He will be buried with military honours at Astwood Cemetery at 2.30 on Thursday.

Farmer’s Offence: John Lamb, Holy Claines Farm, Claines, appeared on a summons for not keeping certain pigs isolated contrary to the Swine Fever Order. Defendant pleaded guilty, he said it was a mistake, his son was responsible for the act. The Chairman said it was carelessness and he was fined 5s.

Mouth Organs and Footballs Wanted: Appeals have been addressed to this office by two soldiers in the County Regiment, one with the 11th Battalion in the Balkans, and the other with the 2nd Battalion in France, asking, for musical instruments and footballs. If readers who possess either mouth organs or footballs will send them to Mrs. Wodehouse, c/o Worcestershire Comforts’ Fund, Old Bank, Worcester, she will despatch them to the front.
