17th July 1915 - County Memorial to King Edward

General Infirmary: Week ending 17th July: Patients admitted 21, discharged 14, in the House 17th July 91 (including 12 wounded soldiers);

Early Vegetables: At Stourport Show, Mr. E.J. Parsons staged a fine collection of vegetables (not for competition), comprising cauliflower, beet (long and globe), turnips, dwarf beans (including the golden wax-podded_, etc. A portion of the exhibit is now on view in Mr. Parson’s window, 18 St. Nicholas Street, and, in view of the interest now taken in vegetables, should attract attention. He says: “As food prices may still advance, it is advisable to make the most of your garden;”

County Memorial to King Edward: The County Memorial to King Edward VII was opened on Thursday. It is some time since the movement for extending the Knightwick Sanatorium as a memorial to King Edward was inaugurated, but the promoters of the project have been hard at work, and their desire has at last been realised. The memorial is now almost ready to attest the county’s practical loyalty. Considerable additions have been made to the Sanatorium buildings, at a cost of over £13,000…Lord Cobham believed that Worcestershire could very safely say, with legitimate pride, that they had an institution second to none of its kind in the country; In conjunction with the local branch of the British Women’s Temperance Association, Mrs. Moore Ede held a garden party at the Deanery on Thursday, when there were about 100 present…Parties of eight were taken over the Deanery by Mrs. Moore Ede – a privilege which was greatly appreciated by the visitors. Afterward tea was daintily served in the Vaulted Hall, and later the members enjoyed an inspection of the beautiful grounds overlooking the Severn, and admired the expansive view taking in the long range of the Malverns;

Affiliation: Annie Rose Jones (24), single woman, 18, St. George’s Lane N., applied for an affiliation order against Pte. Leonard J. Featherstone (20), 2/8th Battn. Worcs. Regt., Maldon. Mr. W.W.A. Tree said that there was no dispute as to paternity, the only question was as to the amount of the order. Defendant said he could not pay more than 2s. 6d. per week, but complainant did not think that was enough. Mr. Maund suggested that the girl was the more to blame because of her greater experience. The Bench made an order of 3s. 6d. per week, to be paid direct to the girl.
