12th June 1915 - Concert at Battenhall Hospital for wounded soldiers

Worcester Butchers’ Action: Appeal to the Public: At a largely-attended meeting of the butchers of Worcester and district, held at the Pack Horse Hotel, convened for the purpose of considering the question of limiting shop hours and restricting the sale of meat as desired by the Government, the following resolution was proposed and carried, with one dissentient: “That owing to the unprecedented price and shortage of fat stock and scarcity of labour, and through so many employees having enlisted, it is decided to close all butchers’ shops at 1 pm on Mondays, commencing the 14th inst., in addition to the usual Thursday half-holiday, and further that the public be asked to assist by giving their daily orders early, and when possible on the previous day, so as to obviate the necessity of a second journey;”

Increased Prices of Spirits: At the annual meeting of the City and County Licensed Victuallers’ Association, it was decided, in consequence of the increased cost of production, to raise the price of gin and rum to 1s. 4d. and 1s. 6d. per half pint respectively, from Monday next. In London and Birmingham the prices of all spirits have been advanced by a penny per quartern;

County Council: Expenditure on Education: Mr. Willis Bund has given notice to move at next Monday’s meeting: That in future until further orders the allowance per child in public elementary schools for books, stationery, and apparatus shall not exceed 2s;

Concert at Battenhall Hospital: A most enjoyable concert was given by Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Potter’s Quartette Party to the wounded soldiers who are undergoing treatment. They were given a hearty reception.; Worcester Theatre Royal: Next week there will be a twice-nightly variety entertainment, including the bright, breezy, topical Navy sketch, called “Navy Blue”; and a comedy of character called “The Borstal Boy.” Other turns include Douglas and Mons, a comedy duo; The Brothers Aston, trick cyclists; and Trixie Willas, comedienne;

Body Found at Diglis Identified: Mrs. Harriet Fidoe, of Hart’s Hill, Brierley Hill, identified the photo and clothing of the man who was found drowned in the river at Diglis on Tuesday, as that of her husband. He had been depressed, and disappeared on June 2nd.
