8th March 1915 - Malvern Link may lose lucrative billets

Rolling casualty count: 686

1st Batt: Relieved in the evening about 7pm by 2nd Northamptons. Same as 7th March;

2nd Batt: A quiet day. German sniping position in front of our left Company badly damaged by 113rd Batt. RFA. ‘C’ and ‘D’ Coys relieved ‘A’ and ‘B’ in the firing line;

3rd Batt: In billets at Locre ;

The report that it is proposed to remove the soldiers billeted at Malvern Link to other parts of the district has caused great consternation at the Link, and representations have been made to the military authorities that there is ample accommodation for the whole Battalion at the Link, with a suitable training ground. Police Officers spent a busy day in the Barnard’s Green neighbourhood with the view to find billets for the men whom it was proposed to transfer from the Link. If the soldiers now billeted are removed from their present quarters, it will cause great disappointment to the residents, many of whom have gone to considerable expense to provide the necessary accommodation.

Hospital Penny Monthly Scheme: At the annual meeting of the Worcestershire Hospital Penny Monthly Collections, held at the Worcester Infirmary this morning, it was stated that the total collections for the year amounted to £248 6s. 9d., a decrease of £21 17s. on last year’s collections. Over £45 had been allocated to the Malvern Hospital, £176 2s. to the Worcester Infirmary, and £7 7s. to the Worcester Opthalmic Institution;

The Pershore and District Volunteer Corps have issued an appeal for subscriptions to provide themselves with rifles and necessary equipment. The appeal states that the present strength of the Company is 64, most of whom have attended 20 drills, and have together subscribed £20 towards the preliminary expenses of the movement. The Corps is now undergoing a thorough course of drills under the tuition of capable Sergeants, who served a long period in the old Volunteer Corps and in the Territorials;

King’s School: Annual Regatta: The Worcester King’s School Boat Club held its annual regatta on Saturday afternoon, on the Severn. The results of the races were as follows: House Championship: Castle House beat Day Boys easily. The heats of this race were rowed from Diglis Locks to the Cathedral Ferry, but the final was from the Locks to the Deanery. Junior Pairs: A.D. Yarnold and O.P. Giles beat D.A.W. Richards and K.P. Smith. All the finishes were very close. Senior Pairs: G. H. Sharpe and C.M. Lane beat F.G. Hemming and J.L.Y. Ottley. A fine race. The senior and junior pairs rowed from the School boathouse to the Cathedral Ferry.
