21st March 1915 - German airships raid Paris for the first time

1st Batt: Marched from Le Franc Factory at 5pm to billets in Rue Efinelte;

2nd Batt: In billets at the Orphanage Bethune;

3rd Batt: In billets at Locre;

Alderman John Bowen, of Moseley, has presented to the Worcestershire Regiment a field kitchen for use with troops in the field. These are most useful articles, and provide a great deal of comfort for the men; Lieut. R. G. S. Hale, of the 6th Worcestershire Regiment, and serving with the 2nd Battalion, is reported to have been seriously wounded in the head during the British charge on the 10th inst. He is a son of Mr. T. Sherwood-Hale, of Alderley House, near Wotton-under-Edge, and much anxiety is felt by his numerous friends in the district as to his condition;

The death occurred after only two days’ illness, from spotted-fever, of Trooper W. Lambert Nicholls, of the Worcestershire Yeomanry, and late of Stoulton. He was 24 years of age and re-enlisted in the Yeomanry on the outbreak of the war, having previously served three years in the Regiment. He will be buried at Stoulton.

The expenditure in grants made by the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Families Relief up until yesterday amounted to £1,544. Of this £1,012 was expended in temporary grants and £532 in weekly grants. The total number of cases registered up to yesterday was 1,098, comprising 701 wives and 397mothers and other dependents. The total number of children affected was 2,053.

Gifts for Fort Royal Park: A meeting of the Committee of the Worcester City Playgrounds and Open Spaces Society was held at the Fort Royal Playground, to see how the playground is being laid out. The Committee also visited the park, and were greatly pleased with the promenade and rose garden and rose pergola, and with the planting in general – also with the well-designed band-stand… the Playground Society, with the consent of the General Purposes Committee, has presented the playground with a granolithic toboggan slide, a jumping pit, and a wall for small cricket to be played against, also a set of six swings. Canon Wilson announced that his gift of a shelter and superintendent’s shed had also been accepted by the Committee;

Twenty men are wanted immediately for the Army Veterinary Corps, which is a unit of the Worcestershire Yeomanry. Recruits should apply to Major Eric Knight, MP at the Yeomanry HQ, Silver Street. The pay is at cavalry rates, with extra efficiency allowances;

The first contingent of wounded soldiers from Birmingham arrived on this afternoon at the Red Cross Hospital which has been established at Hartlebury, where a large house, The Woodlands, has been lent to the local branch of the Red Cross Society by Mrs. Blakeway, of Chaddesley Corbett.
