Gheluvelt Remembrance

Activities, displays and commemoration marking the centenary of the Battle of Gheluvelt.

The Battle of Gheluvelt on the 31st October 1914, was just one example of numerous acts of courage and determination that took place during early months of the First World War.

Gheluvelt Park is a much loved and well used green space, it is also a lasting reminder of one of the most significant events of the 20th Century.

Opening times

11.15am – Members of the 1st Battalion of the Mercian Regiment will march down to a special commemorative stone located opposite the main park gates.

11.30am – a field gun will fire two shots to signal the start of the service.

Mrs. Brotherton. granddaughter of Major Hankey who commanded the Battalion on the day, will unveil the commemorative stone.

Attendees will then move down to the Park’s World War 1 memorial where a Service of Remembrance will begin, conducted by Canon Paul Tongue.

A number of display stands and stalls will promote the works of the Worcestershire Regimental Museum, Air Ambulance, Cadet Forces, Army Reserve, Ambulance services and Royal Legion.
