A Shropshire Lad: The Great War in English

Baritone Roderick Williams is joined by pianist Gary Matthewman for this recital which poignantly recalls in words and music 'the lads in their hundreds' who lost their lives in World ar One. They included George Butterworth, composer of the song setting 'A Shropshire Lad', who died on the Somme. Other featured composers include Ivor Gurney, who also fought on the western front; John Ireland; Gerald Finzi and the contemporary composer Anthony Payne, famous for his completion of Edward Elgar's third symphony.
